The Lost Art of Equestrian Etiquette

These days it seems like equestrian etiquette has long been forgotten about and some may argue that it  may no longer exist. Every month the Happy Horse Gazette will feature a new topic of concern relating to the loss of etiquette in the equine industry and how to bring it back. Many situations will be discussed and how to deal with them in an  appropriate manner. We hope you enjoy these helpful hints and share them with other horse people.

In the outback country of the West, working cowboys still follow rules of etiquette that have been handed down through generations. How do you know these rules if you haven’t been exposed to cowboy culture? Mary Flitner of Diamond Trail Ranch in Greybull, Wyo., sums it up best, “Be quiet and humble. Your cowboy skills (if you have any) will show in due time and you need not try to show them.”

Cowboy Etiquette

* Cowboy Code #1: Never touch another person’s horse or tack.

* Cowboy Code #2: Be ready and on time to work.

* Cowboy Code #3: Don’t bring your dogs unless you ask permission.

* Cowboy Code #4: Never ride ahead of the cow boss.

* Cowboy Code #5: Don’t turn your horse’s tail to a cow.

* Cowboy Code #6: Don’t ride in front of someone else.

* Cowboy Code #7: Don’t ride away and leave a dismounted person at the gate.

* Cowboy Code #8: Work cattle at a walk.

* Cowboy Code #9: Help with the cut or ride into the herd only when asked.

* Cowboy Code #10: Take your rope down only when asked.

* Cowboy Code #11: Ride up on your rope in the branding corral.

* Cowboy Code #12: Don’t brand another man’s cattle.

Equine Astrology
Aries
21 March - 20 April

Aries is the first sign of the zodiac, so a horse born under this sun sign likes to be first and is a natural leader. Aries is a cardinal fire sign and is ruled by the planet Mars. The Aries-sun horse is therefore extremely energetic by nature, as well as competitive and decisive. This horse shines when it is given challenges, as it needs to test itself in competition. Whilst an Aries horse needs to be given space mentally and emotionally within the partnership to take some initiatives, you do need to teach this horse to think before it acts. The Aries-sun horse's impulsiveness can otherwise lead it into difficulties! The Aries horse also needs physical space to do its own thing each day, as it is such a bundle of energy and loves to be busy and active. It needs to run free in a field and challenge itself against other horses by playing dominance games and testing its physical strength. As Aries rules the head, this horse may have something about the head, which attracts attention. For this reason, many Aries-sun horses have a noticeable feature or a cut or scar somewhere on the head. The Aries horse may also be prone to bumping or hitting its head!

Next month Equine Astrology will feature Taurus!
