The
Lost Art of Equestrian Etiquette
These days it seems like equestrian etiquette has
long been forgotten about and some may argue that it may no
longer exist. Every month the Happy Horse Gazette will feature a new
topic of concern relating to the loss of etiquette in the equine
industry and how to bring it back. Many situations will be discussed
and how to deal with them in an appropriate manner. We hope
you enjoy these helpful hints and share them with other horse
people.
|
| This month we
will focus on the etiquette of buying and selling the horse. We will
examine both parties involved and discuss the proper behavior of
each. Everyone has some disaster story to tell about the sale or
purchase of a horse. It is unfortunate that this process has so many
negative stigmas, which are usually brought on because of dishonest
sales and scams. As a buyer or a seller it is extremely important to
represent yourself honestly and to the best of your ability. This
will save many people from wasting their precious time. Listed below
are etiquette do's and don'ts for both the buyer and the seller involved
in a horse sale. This list has many good points, but may not
encounter all the issues that could arise during the transaction.
Use common sense and remember the Golden Rule, "Treat others the
way you would like to be treated."
|
|
Buyer's Etiquette Check List
-
DO ask your vet to check
over any possible purchase before you get too excited.
-
DO decide on your price
range and keep within your limit.
-
DO treat the seller as you
would expect to be treated in the same circumstances.
-
DO ride the horse and
handle him to see if you 'gel'.
-
DON'T ask a friend who is
not an expert to go with you for advice. This is time for the
experts.
-
DON'T insult the sellers
by trying to knock then down on price to a ridiculous degree.
-
DON'T make arrangements to
view and not turn up.
-
DON'T choose a horse whose
achievements are much greater than yours. He will only be
confused or frighten you to death!
-
DON'T buy an unbroken
three year old because he is cheap unless you are experienced at
making horses.
|
Seller's Etiquette Check List
-
DO include as much
information as you can afford in the initial advertisement.
-
DO sell any special tack
with the horse.
-
DO be honest about the
animals health and behavior.
-
DO have him professionally
measured.
-
DO be aware that some
people will feel they need to try your horse more than once and
(if you are happy that they are serious) make provision for
this.
-
DON'T present a false
picture of your horse in the hope of a sale.
-
DON'T keep quiet about
anything they should know about. If he tends to kick when being
groomed or if he doesn't like pigs, they should be warned.
-
DON'T wear him out before
the perspective buyers arrive if he has a "fizzy" temperament.
There are plenty of riders who prefer a bit of sparkle in a
horse.

Equine Astrology
Scorpio
24 October - 23 November
This month we celebrate the astrology of the Scorpio! Scorpios
are a water sign and are ruled by the planets Mars and Pluto. These two
planets bestow upon your worthy steed an extremely strong personality. They
are courageous, determined, purposeful, persevering and indeed masterful.
While this is a distinct advantage when it is applied to his work, when
these same characteristics are pitted against you, you need to be a match
for him. Scorpio horse is not a good choice for a weak or indecisive owner.
His acute intuition will pick up on your uncertainty and you will be beaten
before you even start. With this horse or pony you have your work cut out
for you. He is indeed a challenge. These horses also have a good side and
tend to hide their fighting spirit unless he is feeling vulnerable or
afraid. True, he enjoys the fight and he is not a good loser; but his enormous
courage is matched by his honesty which makes him very genuine. With a
confident and competent handler he will learn quickly and go from strength
to strength. Any activity that requires staying power suits the Scorpio
horse. Endurance and long distance riding are two areas where he will
shine. This enormous facility for endurance coupled with a passion and
bravery makes your Scorpio horse the perfect mount for riding cross country.
Unless your horse was born in the southern hemisphere it is highly unlikely
that he will have been born when the Sun was in the sign of Scorpio.
However, the Moon is in the sign of Scorpio for two and a half days every
month. It is therefore possible that he has a Scorpio Moon.
Next month Equine Astrology will feature Sagittarius!
